The Theory Test

The Theory Test
The theory test consists of 50 multiple choice questions on topics found in the highway code, such as driver attitude and awareness, traffic signs and regulations, effects of alcohol, drugs and tiredness, safety and environmental aspects of vehicles etc. At least 43 correct answers are required in order for a candidate to be successful. This section of the test will last for a maximum of 57 minutes. You may then elect to take a 3 minute break before the start of the hazard perception part of the test.
For the hazard perception section of the test you must try to identify hazards in a series of 14 video clips which feature every day road scenes. You should aim to do this as early as possible as you would whilst driving! In each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards. To score the highest mark of 5 for any one developing hazard you'll need to respond during the early part of its development. Candidates must score at least 44 out of 75 in order to be successful.
Please see our learning materials section for information on how to prepare for these tests!
We advise that you study for these tests as early as possible, but it may be useful to wait until after your first few practical lessons so that you gain a basic understanding of road procedures and good driving practises.
A theory test pass certificate is required before you apply for the practical test, and is valid for two years. If the candidate then fails to pass the practical test within this period the theory test must retaken in order to attain a valid theory certificate before booking a practical test!
